The photo above shows Mitsuyo Maeda (left) with Japanese Sword and two unknown European fencing with swords in a gymnasium. It was probably during his stay in Europe from 1907 to 1908 Maeda. Maeda and other Japanese people visited this time not only Eurpa, but much of the world, to discover a new combat system called Judo. Maeda also took part in many trips during the price wars. Away from the judo demonstrations and price wars resulted, as the photo attests again and again opportunities to compare with the fencing of a different culture weapons in combat.

interesting Just as the photo is the person Mitsuyo Maeda himself he was on 18 November 1878 Born in Hirosaki. As a teenager, he ran for a while Sumo, but then switched to judo. Since his studies at a university in Tokyo, he was encouraged by Jigoro Kano, the founder of modern judo.

He traveled with other judoka the United States of America (eg New York), Cuba, England (Liverpool, London), Scotland (Inverness), Belgium, Spain, France (Paris), Mexico (Mexico City), El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina and Brazil. Everywhere he gave demonstrations of those new martial art which was called Judo. He also played as a prize fighter in the course of his life more 2,000 successful combat. He spared no challenge and was fighting on his travels, including against wrestlers, boxers and Capoeirista. Among his opponents were reputable men and Henry Irslinger or Jimmy Esson (opposite Jimmy Esson he lost in the then-popular free-style wrestling and Henry Irslinger he could in the first rematch, also in free-style wrestling defeat.).

At a demonstration in 1917 at the Teatro da Paz in Belém (Brazil) was also present a 14-year-old boy, Maeda later accepted as his student: Carlos Gracie. This was the birth of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
